D.I.Y Haircoloring with Better Natured Hair Color

Here’s a fact: I am not an amateur in d.i.y hair coloring. I’ve actually been coloring my hair for years now. I like it because it saves me time and money of course, plus I have fine hair so it’s not really that hard for me to color my hair. Another thing is, I know exactly what kind of products that I used for my hair. I also love discovering new hair color brands and one of them is Better Natured™ Hair Color.

The great thing about Better Natured™ Hair Color is that it’s naturally derived*. That means it has vegan formulas, with a base containing coconut oil + a Triple Plant Milk Blend of Coconut, Tahitian Palm & White Orchid Milks. It has also natural Arginine to enhance color deposition. The level of ammonia in Better Natured is optimized per shade to ensure the best gray coverage and color result for that level.  Better Natured also contains a high pure pigment load for vibrant, perfectly true to tone color. It is also gentle on the hair and scalp and it smells good with its light floral fragrance. So those are the reasons why I love Better Natured™ Hair Color. Feel free to take THE HAIR COLOR QUIZ.

*Better Natured™ hold themselves to high standards and use the Global ISO Standard 16128 which defines naturally-derived as a plant or mineral derived material and water which is found in nature and has undergone limited processing.

    At-Home Hair Coloring Tutorial

Better Natured Hair Color can be mixed using a bowl and brush or an applicator bottle.

    1. Measure 20 V developer into applicator bottle.

    2. Add 2 fl. oz/60 ml of color into applicator bottle or bowl. Shake or mix well.

    3. Apply to dry hair.

    4. Apply to dry hair. Time it for 35 minutes. Rinse well after application, shampoo and condition.

    Before and After

The after result picture is on the right. I used the Better Natured 5A Light Ash Brown. My hair color on the left looks really rusty and orangey. I don’t like it. I like the tone of my hair color on the right, it’s exactly what I want to achieve. Plus it’s healthy-looking.

After I colored my hair, I used Better Nature Hydrating Leave-In Milk to soften, prep, and detangle my hair. Then, I used Better Natured Heat Styling Lotion. It protects hair from heat and humidity, it prevents frizz and preps hair for a soft finish.

Then I sprayed Better Natured Beachy Textured Spray to hold the curls, adds volume, and gives a beachy textured look.

I really love my hair color, it’s exactly what I want to achieve. Most of all, it’s healthy-looking. No more rusty-orangey hair. It’s just perfect! You can purchase this product at www.betternatured.com.  Use **APRIL25 at checkout for 25% off your product order.

Summer Skincare with “For The Biome”

As per Paul the founder of For The Biome (Bi-om) “Your keratinocytes are smiling.” That’s exactly what it is. When I was taking Physiology and Anatomy class way back when I was in dental school, I remember how keratinocytes, the outer-most surface layer of our skin, naturally renew every 30 days or so. When we were younger, our skin renewed a lot more often. That explains why our babies have the smoothest skin ever. As we get older, the skin slows down; factors like sun exposure, the products we use, and our lifestyle play into how quickly the aging process happens. Summer is prime time for age-accelerating exposure, so it’s important to take extra steps to keep your skin protected during the warmer months.

Allow me first to expand upon sun exposure—too much sun exposure inhibits the natural renewal of our skin. So if you get a sun burn or got really tan, the amount of UV light exposure you just received could lead to skin damage. And that’s going to speed up the aging process. We all want to age gracefully right?

Secondly, the products we use could make it more difficult for your skin to protect itself. For this reason, Paul, the founder of For The Biome, a herbalist, and also the founder of New Chapter, a well-known herbal supplement business purchased by Procter & Gamble in 2012, created a line of skincare products that use 100% active and whole ingredients. He applied his herbal expertise and knowledge by concocting exclusively natural products that visibly and cellularly benefit your skin from the first use.

Lastly but definitely not the least, is the lifestyle we choose to have. Every day we are given choices and it’s up to us how to make the choices that benefit us in our lifetime—from the food we eat, our daily habits, activities, and even our emotions. How we perceive things, how we choose to be carried away by our emotions, and how we develop our mindsets. They are all connected and contribute to our life as a whole, not just our skin (although healthy skin is dependent on the health of all aspects of life).

I also want to share the step by step process of using the whole kit, The Sentient Starter Set, that For The Biome sent me. I wouldn’t promote or write about products that I don’t believe in. Part of my job is discovering new brands and understanding if they truly benefit everyone. I encourage you to do this too when looking into products and brands.

So let’s get to it !

    1. First off, I use the Empower Powder 2-in-1 cleanser which also doubles as a mask. It’s a fermented powder that features aloe vera, ashwagandha, saffron and amla. I haven’t heard of amla before, when I looked it up it says it’s a berry with some of the highest vitamin C content and a very effective antioxidant. Here are some of the benefits of amla, just in case if you are curious like me. Empower comes with a tool kit with a little bowl, spoon and face towel. I swear, it’s super cute. For The Biome includes a free Tool Kit with your first purchase of any powder mask or cleanser.

So you just have to use 1/4 tsp of powder with equal parts of warm water.

What to do: What to do: For cleanser, use fingertips to massage evenly in circular motions for 15-30 seconds. For mask, apply a thin layer evenly over damp skin and let it sit for up to 10 mins. Then rinse well. You can do the mask once or twice a week.

    2. Next, the Restore Essence Spray. There are still a lot of you who that aren’t familiar with essenses and that’s okay. We are moms, we are always busy. That’s why I’m here to explain to you why essences are essential for skincare. While essences tend to be mostly water, this one features New Zealand Manuka honey and Swiss black bee ferment.  It has similar benefits to a serum but with a lower molecular weight than most face creams, since it’s in a liquid form like your toner but not really a toner at all. It’s penetrates your skin much deeper. Restore Essence Spray hydrates and rebalances the skin while using highly concentrated levels of active ingredients. This extra hydration allows your skin to absorb all the goodness of your next product even more so than usual. That’s why it is a primer before you add your oil serum.

Ingredients: Swiss black bee + New Zealand Manuka honey, 829 MGO

Based on my research, Manuka honey is a good antioxidant for the skin. It’s believed to replenish and restore your skin when applied topically. From what I’ve read, it’s also good for acne. To add, the MGO is the ratings on the honey, and that’s really important. A 829 MGO means it has superior antibacterial properties and is potent enough for cosmetic use. That’s a win.

What to do: Just spray it on your skin, like a mist.

    3. Finally, the Shield Face Serum. Serums are more biologically active than many ordinary creams that we generally use. These are known for faster, better and deeper penetration in the skin and thus giving faster results. Serums are generally used to brighten skin (not whiten skin, that means it evens out skin tone), rejuvenate, revitalize, prevent ageing, moisturize and ease inflammation. So many more benefits than your regular skin cream. But what I love about Sheild Face Serum is the way it makes my skin glow. Oh my god, I love that dewy glow to my skin, it looks youthful.

Ingredients: astaxanthin, rosehip seed, marigold, chamomile

What to do: Apply 2-4 drops on your fingertips and gently massage onto skin.

There you go, that’s my summer skincare routine. Have fun with this! Explore what ritual speaks to you. For best results, please only use the Sentient Starter Set for 14 days. I encourage you to go without makeup during this time and to even go a few days between washing your face. On days that you do not wash your face, you can use an essence spray for a pick-me-up and Shield Face Serum for added moisturization. I also put sunscreen on my face and body, since we are out at the pool every day. Aside from that, I wear a hat  when I’m out for too long. It’s okay for my arms and legs to get a bit more tan than usual but the face has to be protected. I’m in my late 30’s now and it’s really even more important to prevent more wrinkles. We can’t stop time and gravity, but at least we are doing it gracefully.

Thank you so much for reading and have a great summer!

Importance Of Sunscreen Even In Winter

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #BeautyWithNeutrogena #CollectiveBias

When i was living in the Philippines, there is no doubt you have to wear sunscreen every waking moment of your life. It’s always hot and humid there. When i immigrated here in Michigan, i thought you didn’t need sunscreen during winter. Wrong. I thought it’s just an option and not a necessity. Wrong. You have to wear sunscreen even in winter and I’m sharing with you the reasons why it’s important!

    1. Snow reflects up to 80% UV light from the sun. During winter the sun is closer to earth and its rays are even stronger than when it is warm. UVA is the type of exposure we get and that contributes to skin cancer and age spots. It penetrates through clouds and windows. So even we are all bundled up all around this season, our face, ears, and hands are still exposed. I recommend using NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost City Shield™ Water Gel with Broad Spectrum SPF 25. It is a face level skincare for your body. This hydrating water gel protects skin against sun damage, pollution, and environmental stressors. It is formulated with Hyaluronic Acid that hydrates and quenches dry skin, leaving it looking smooth and supple. This water gel has SPF for every day, not just summer sun care. Apply this evenly to cleansed face and neck every day to instantly quench and help protect skin.

    1. Thinner ozone layer. Do you know that ozone is the earth’s sunscreen? It filters and protects us from harmful UV rays. Sometimes we think the warm rays of the sun during winter is good because it feels good but little did we know that we are less protected. We are much more protected by the ozone during the summer. For us living in the Northern part of the globe, ozone level drops from December to March. Aside from this altering change of weather that causes the thinning of the ozone layer, one man made factor is pollution as well. Pollution is everywhere and it’s also one of the causes that makes our skin dehydrated. So the solution for this, after we applied our NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost City Shield™ Water Gel with Broad Spectrum SPF 25, spritz some NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost CITY SHIELD™ Facial Gel Mist.  A unique facial gel mist hydratesl, refreshes, and replenishes dry and pollution-stressed skin. Ideal for on-the-go, spritz the facial mist spray bottle during the day for refreshed, dewy skin. I love this after i put my make up on. It gives that dewy glow, it feels refreshing as well.

    1. You still get enough Vitamin D even if you wear sunscreen. You only need a little amount of sun exposure to get Vitamin D and sunscreen protects you more from the harmful UVA rays, than you need your Vitamin D. Plus you can take supplement Vitamin D.
    1. UVA is higher on high elevation. When your in the mountains skiing, sledding or any winter sports that take place on elevated areas, keep in mind that UV increases nearly four percent for every 1,000-foot increase in elevation. That’s more than the amount of exposure you get when you are at the beach.

So sometimes we think we are more protected in the winter because it’s cloudy and the sunshine feels good. We are wrong, we are actually more at risk to skin cancer and premature aging. So it’s always important to wear sunscreen even in winter. Here’s the difference between UVA light and UVB light.

UVA – the long-wave light or also known as the silent killer between the two. They are present all day long and all year round, even if it’s cloudy. You don’t feel them unlike UVB but it penetrates more in the skin thus losing our skin elasticity and firmness. They are the leading cause of skin cancer and wrinkles. They penetrate through glass, unlike UVB.

UVB – the smaller range wave light. It doesn’t penetrate as much as UVA but it also powerful because these are the ones that contribute to sunburn, skin discoloration and skin cancer. They have higher levels during summer months and to tropical areas. UVB is reflected in sand, water, and snow. It’s 80% higher on snow, especially at high altitude. So it’s extremely important to wear your sunscreen.

I bought these 1.7-oz of NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost City Shield™ Water Gel with Broad Spectrum SPF 25 and 3.3-fl. oz spray bottle of NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost CITY SHIELD™ Facial Gel Mist at Meijer.
