When i was living in the Philippines, there is no doubt you have to wear sunscreen every waking moment of your life. It’s always hot and humid there. When i immigrated here in Michigan, i thought you didn’t need sunscreen during winter. Wrong. I thought it’s just an option and not a necessity. Wrong. You have to wear sunscreen even in winter and I’m sharing with you the reasons why it’s important!

  1. Snow reflects up to 80% UV light from the sun. During winter the sun is closer to earth and its rays are even stronger than when it is warm. UVA is the type of exposure we get and that contributes to skin cancer and age spots. It penetrates through clouds and windows. So even we are all bundled up all around this season, our face, ears, and hands are still exposed. I recommend using NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost City Shield™ Water Gel with Broad Spectrum SPF 25. It is a face level skincare for your body. This hydrating water gel protects skin against sun damage, pollution, and environmental stressors. It is formulated with Hyaluronic Acid that hydrates and quenches dry skin, leaving it looking smooth and supple. This water gel has SPF for every day, not just summer sun care. Apply this evenly to cleansed face and neck every day to instantly quench and help protect skin.

  1. Thinner ozone layer. Do you know that ozone is the earth’s sunscreen? It filters and protects us from harmful UV rays. Sometimes we think the warm rays of the sun during winter is good because it feels good but little did we know that we are less protected. We are much more protected by the ozone during the summer. For us living in the Northern part of the globe, ozone level drops from December to March. Aside from this altering change of weather that causes the thinning of the ozone layer, one man made factor is pollution as well. Pollution is everywhere and it’s also one of the causes that makes our skin dehydrated. So the solution for this, after we applied our NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost City Shield™ Water Gel with Broad Spectrum SPF 25, spritz some NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost CITY SHIELD™ Facial Gel Mist.  A unique facial gel mist hydratesl, refreshes, and replenishes dry and pollution-stressed skin. Ideal for on-the-go, spritz the facial mist spray bottle during the day for refreshed, dewy skin. I love this after i put my make up on. It gives that dewy glow, it feels refreshing as well.

  1. You still get enough Vitamin D even if you wear sunscreen. You only need a little amount of sun exposure to get Vitamin D and sunscreen protects you more from the harmful UVA rays, than you need your Vitamin D. Plus you can take supplement Vitamin D.
  1. UVA is higher on high elevation. When your in the mountains skiing, sledding or any winter sports that take place on elevated areas, keep in mind that UV increases nearly four percent for every 1,000-foot increase in elevation. That’s more than the amount of exposure you get when you are at the beach.

So sometimes we think we are more protected in the winter because it’s cloudy and the sunshine feels good. We are wrong, we are actually more at risk to skin cancer and premature aging. So it’s always important to wear sunscreen even in winter. Here’s the difference between UVA light and UVB light.

UVA – the long-wave light or also known as the silent killer between the two. They are present all day long and all year round, even if it’s cloudy. You don’t feel them unlike UVB but it penetrates more in the skin thus losing our skin elasticity and firmness. They are the leading cause of skin cancer and wrinkles. They penetrate through glass, unlike UVB.

UVB – the smaller range wave light. It doesn’t penetrate as much as UVA but it also powerful because these are the ones that contribute to sunburn, skin discoloration and skin cancer. They have higher levels during summer months and to tropical areas. UVB is reflected in sand, water, and snow. It’s 80% higher on snow, especially at high altitude. So it’s extremely important to wear your sunscreen.
